X-Files: I Want to Believe
Movieweb recently interviewed David Duchovny about the release of the DVD for The TV Set (Jake Kasdan) when the actor decided to drop a little bomb. Duchovny told Movieweb, "the script [for X-Files 2] is written and as far as I know we're all trying to shoot in December at some point."
Sure, there had been some vague promises before, but this latest announcement is the first time anyone has heard of a start date for the production. News of the sequel began to heat up when Agent Scully herself, Gillian Anderson, had discussed the possibility on her personal web site back in May. The last time Duchovny had commented on the film was back in July, but he had remained relatively tight-lipped on many of the details involved.
Duchovny requested that fans try and contain themselves and, "keep it a secret and just give everybody a fresh experience of not knowing what the movie's about" -- staying true to form, there was not much he could add beyond confirming that yes, the script is complete and they are ready and willing to start production. Even though it is not exactly the most detailed information, when it comes to X-Files, I think most fans will take what they can get.
I was never a huge fan, but I got the idea of the show from the few episodes I watched, and enjoyed the movie.

I think you only really needed a general idea of the show to enjoy the movie- I probably watched less than you and enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to more news on this project.

Though this much talked-about sequel has been flying under the radar, with most of the news coming from different interviews with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, it appears 20th Century Fox is making it a high priority picture. Coming Soon reports The X-Files 2 will begin production in Vancouver on December 10th, with both Duchovny and Anderson reprising their roles as Special Agent Fox Mulder and Special Agent Dana Scully. Series creator Chris Carter will direct the film off a script written by Carter and Frank Spotnitz. Apparently, casting breakdowns refer to the film under the tile of Done One. Not sure if that means anything, but the most obvious is that, well, they've "done one" film and now they're doing another.
This news confirms what Duchovny first told folks back in September; at that time, he confirmed that the script was finished and they were supposed to begin filming at some point in December. There's no word on what the sequel will be about, but we do know that it won't pick up where the last one left off. This will be a straight-up stand alone story that, supposedly, has nothing to do with the first film or (I think) the show. No word on a release date yet, but I'd imagine we might see it arrive in theaters in January or February of 2009. It's been almost 10 years since the original X-Files film hit theaters, and it will be interesting to see if the show's massive fanbase still shows up for the sequel.
The show had some really amazing episodes early on. Duchovny really blew it leaving the show to pursue a movie career that wasn't there.
He is phenomenal in his new show on Showtime though.
oh?
I don't like any of Duchovny's movies either but I like him in this show.
It's a show about a writer who moved from NY to Cali with his kid and girlfriend. He hasn't been writing ever since he and his ex broke up, who is now getting married to another guy. He drinks too much, smokes dope, screws around with a bunch of hot girls, but somehow his life still sucks - it just seems like he is playing his "real-life" self a bit in this show.

The Hollywood Reporter announced that Amanda Peet, Billy Connolly, and Xzibit have all joined the cast of X-Files 2. Details are pretty sketchy as to who Scottish comedian Connolly will play, but THR did confirm that Xzibit (the 'Pimper of Rides') and Peet would be playing fellow FBI agents alongside our friends Mulder and Scully (David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson).

Reportedly, the film "will dump the long-running 'mythology' plotline" -- you remember, "that aliens live among us and are part of a colonizing effort." Creator Chris Carter doesn't want any part of a mythology "conspiracy," since he feels that all those threads got tied up with the conclusion of the TV series in 2002. Instead he's looking at scare tactics.
Carter's comment about his desire to introduce The X Files to a whole new audience: "There were kids who couldn't watch it on TV because it was too scary. Now they're in college. I wanted a movie that everyone could go to." That scary, unnerving quality was one of the hallmarks of the show, and a big reason why many of us tuned in.
Said trailer debuted at Wondercon in San Francisco over the weekend during a panel on the film. While it starts out far away, the camera does zoom in for a fairly good look at the remainder of the first X-Files footage in years. AICN has a pretty good description of the trailer for those who miss some dialogue or what have you.
Look for this trailer to arrive online in a better format next week. In the meantime, feast your eyes on the preview above. X-Files 2 arrives in theaters on July 25.

Fox Home Entertainment will release a 2-disc DVD collection of 8 one-hour episodes of
The X-Files on July 8, 2008.
The DVD collection, titled The X-Files Revelations, is dubbed as an “Essential Guide To The X-Files Movie” because all eight episodes were handpicked by the series creator Chris Carter because they tie-in with the July 25th theatrical release of X-Files 2.
The chosen episodes span seasons 1-6 and cover a variety of paranormal and unexplained cases centering on alien abductions, psychic phenomenon, and life forms not quite human that set the stage for the upcoming feature film. Each selection includes special on-camera introductions by Carter and producer Frank Spotnitz revealing why each were chosen and how they relate to the upcoming theatrical sequel.
Bonus features on the DVD set include the film’s teaser trailer, a free Hollywood Movie Money ticket to see the sequel in theaters, and the WonderCon panel session with Carter and Spotnitz. The WonderCon panel also features series stars David Duchovny (who plays Fox Mulder) and Gillian Anderson (who plays Dana Scully) making their first fan convention appearance together in several years and taking questions from rabid “X-Philes,” in an interview spanning over 38 minutes.

AP: This summer's X-Files flick has finally been given a proper title. Wanna know what it is? Of course you do -- it shall be known as The X-Files: I Want to Believe. 20th Century Fox signed off on the title today, and that's what they're going with. Fans of the television series will recognize the slogan 'I Want to Believe' from a poster Mulder (David Duchovny) had hanging in his basement office where he and Scully (Gillian Anderson) worked.
On the title, director Chris Carter said, "It's a natural title. It's a story that involves the difficulties in mediating faith and science."
